An Introduction to Baccarat
Baccarat is a casino card game that is played by betting on one of three hands. The player on the bet deal with a house edge of 1.06%, the banker bet will have a house edge of 1.24%, and the tie bet will have a house edge of 14.36%. The objective of the game is to have a hand total that is closer to 9 than the other two hands. The game is played with six decks of cards, and the hands are dealt from a shoe.
The game of baccarat has a Baccarat Formula (สูตรบาคาร่า) that works on three possible outcomes: player, banker, and tie. The player and the banker bets will have a house edge of around 1.2%. On the other hand, the corresponding tie bet has a much higher house edge of 14.4%. Therefore, avoiding the tie bet is advisable if you want to win money at baccarat.
The game’s object is to have a hand total closer to 9 than the other two hands. If your hand totals more than 9, then the 10th digit will be dropped (e.g., if your hand totals 19, then your hand value will be 9). The game is played with six decks of cards, and the hands are dealt from a shoe.
To begin, each player bets either on the player’s hand, the banker’s hand, or on the possibility of a tie between these two hands. Then, two cards are dealt face up to each hand according to strict rules stipulated in the table below. After viewing their two starting cards, each player may elect to receive a third card according to the rules below, or they may stand with just their two original cards. Once all players have made their decision whether or not to take a third card (or “hit”), all remaining active players’ hands are resolved according to these rules:
If either the player’s or banker’s hand totals 8 or 9 (“natural”), no more cards are drawn, and whichever hand totals closest to 9 wins; this result is called a “natural.”
If neither hand has a natural and if after drawing an extra card (or “hit”)player’s hand still totals less than 5, he must draw another hit; otherwise, he stands (“stays”).
If after drawing an extra card (or “hit”), the banker’s initial total was 5 or less but now totals 6 or more, he must stand; otherwise, he draws another hit following these same rules for additional hits as above until his total either exceeds 7 (“busts”), in which case his wager automatically loses or his total remains 6 or less in which case he automatically wins (this last rule corresponds with what would happen if his initial two-card total were 7 instead).
As you can see, baccarat is not a complicated game to understand or play. However, Baccarat is a casino game with a relatively low house edge—which means that if you play your cards right, you could earn some serious money. So how do you go about playing baccarat?
